Mail Handler Connection to the 2012 Summer Olympics
(July 28, 2012) As the 2012 summer olympic games begin in London, all Mail Handlers should be aware of their connection to this global event. The United States of America has selected twelve athletes to represent our country on the USA Olympic Boxing Team. One of those gifted athletes is Errol Spence, who will make his olympic debut on Sunday, July 29th. Errol is the 22-year old son of Errol Spence Sr. and Debra Spence. Debra is a Mail Handler working at the Dallas NDC, and a proud member of NPMHU Local 311. Errol is pictured here with his mom and dad.
Errol Spence is 5’9” tall, weighs in at 152 pounds, and currently fights in the welterweight division. Errol started boxing as a freshman in high school, and his hard work, dedication, and natural ability allowed him to quickly advance in this demanding sport. He has an impressive record of 110 wins and only 10 losses. He is ranked #1 in the nation, and #5 in the world among amateur boxers. To help prepare him for his Olympic journey, Errol has quickly amassed a number of important boxing titles, including:
- Within six months of first entering the boxing gym, he won the 2005 Texas Silver Gloves Championship;
- He won the Dallas Golden Gloves Championship in five consecutive years from 2006-2010;
- He won the Golden Gloves National Championship in both 2009 and 2010;
- He earned first place in both the 2010 and 2011 USA National Championship
The draw is now complete for the 2012 Olympics. The round of 32 will commence on Sunday, July 29th, and Errol will face off against Myke Riberio de Carvalho from Brazil at 10:00 pm in the ExCel Arena in London. The winner of that bout will advance to fight against Vikas Kisham of India, who drew a bye in the round of 32.
Noteworthy on his official Olympic bio is that when Errol was asked who he would name as his biggest influence in his life, his response was “my mother.” The NPMHU sends its best wishes to Errol, to his Mail Handler mom, and to the entire Spence family as they embark on this wonderful experience.
